When you really need the big organization to listen to your concerns

It’s our first call of 2024.
Before we get to that, though, I wanted to share something really important with all of you.
In the final weeks of 2023, the national professional association for lactation care providers, USLCA, announced a partnership that was immediately recognized as being very problematic and giving the appearance of a major conflict of interest.
Many people posted on social media about this, and there are some very real concerns about it for many members as well as non-members.
As a past President of USLCA and a current member, I want you to know this:
I have reached out directly to them with my concerns, and I made sure to let them know that I stand ready to enter into a fuller conversation with them about this situation.
The implications of the partnership they announced are serious, so I reached out to the Board directly because that is the most important way we have to communicate with the organization. It’s very convenient to post on social media when we have a complaint or a concern, but reaching out to the Board directly by email to clearly state your needs is the best way there is to ensure that an organization takes your concerns seriously.
I fully expect that the Board of USLCA will be transparent with the public about how this situation unfolded and what they plan to do to rectify it. I have confidence that they will respond in this way. As a member, I have every right to expect that, and historically, I have no reason to believe that this problem will not be corrected.
I am approaching this with patience and encouraging you to give the Board grace. They are people just like us, wearing multiple hats, serving their clientele in lactation, raising their own families, working hard in their spare minutes to voluntarily run a large professional organization. There is no compensation for serving on USLCA’s all-volunteer Board.
