Humility comes from working on yourself to clear the way in your mind.
Working From Scars, Not WoundsÂ
Your passion led you here to this work: your anger and frustration over the lack of support you received on your own lactation journey, or the intensity of how empowered you felt when you were breastfeeding and feeding your baby your own milk, and maybe even the joy of helping others through your "other" job.
Those intense feelings led you want to become the support for other people that you didn't have. You formed a vision of how you would help, how you would facilitate, how you would advocate for them. You acquired the knowledge you needed to do the work.
But did you process and manage those intense feelings? (In other fields, it’s built in to the training structure, but not in lactation care.)
It's likely that you explored at least some of the lactation events you experienced, applying your newly acquired knowledge to understand it from a different angle.
It can be really challenging, though, to take the time to fully evaluate your story and bring out new meaning and insights.
And it doesn't happen without effort, so even if it's been 20, 30, or 40 years since your own lactation challenges, you can still have open wounds.Â
I want you to know this: there is immense value in stepping back, spending intentional time assessing your own experiences, and thinking about the "soft spots" in your journey. I call them soft spots because they leave you with feelings that can sometimes overwhelm your analytical lactation mind or cause you to work subconsciously to steer your clients in certain directions.
